00:02:44
i i stank well i yes and make it
00:02:51
that's a while ago i think um
00:02:58
to start with that will change doing is now um since the uh still our studio here is
00:03:04
in english uh i would just continue that um tonight that would like to talk about some project with
00:03:12
been working on wall built some built some
00:03:16
some competitions for the last seven years all uh
00:03:23
it's possible to categorise them uh
00:03:26
in terms of location and situation urban suburban and
00:03:34
in relation to the nature or not has got the
00:03:37
circumstances also all five function uh we have like for
00:03:45
this lecture presents three kind of a different um fields we've been working in
00:03:52
in the private sector the private houses the arts and culture and education
00:04:01
um
00:04:04
we present ourselves like um um the arcade we as
00:04:10
architects who uh hard to um look at the uh situation
00:04:18
and respond to it with and reflect on it so the arcade our architecture
00:04:23
is about this situation is about this relationship between the building and its own environment
00:04:31
um in the way how the building can tell the story of the side of the story of the situation
00:04:39
reflect on the situation through which architecture and be part of that
00:04:46
and vitamin at the same time so it's created by and creating
00:04:50
the situation or the environment um the first three project uh i'd like to show
00:04:56
you is are a private houses they're all in a reason to plant suburbs of reykjavik
00:05:04
and although they were not uh we did not work and then at the same time
00:05:11
they became like at three all it became like a neighbour or related
00:05:17
and that just came naturally it's just the way they developed
00:05:23
and they're all up out uh how can how was it possible to
00:05:29
how how can we built in these circumstances via a contemporary suburbs are
00:05:40
doing the first years of this was the last years of twenty century and the first years of the twenty first
00:05:47
a lot of areas around uh reykjavik with double opt for private houses
00:05:55
really a building boom off huge of a loss
00:06:00
in a very small plots
00:06:06
that they were all focused on the interiors
00:06:10
they were the houses were as big as that could possibly be show the land
00:06:15
around them and the land yeah land next to the houses were like the leftovers
00:06:22
so they did not the do not have any spatial quality or any quality up or uh
00:06:31
the life of the people that i it will be a the mortal it is
00:06:35
to create this generous interior world
00:06:40
staffed with got chips and technical um solutions
00:06:46
expensive materials expensive designer uh uh furniture but
00:06:52
the content and the context is really left over
00:06:57
um they get in the car and the car as in the morning drive away i get back on into the garage and into wrong
00:07:06
um we did three houses in these circumstances
00:07:11
and our question was how is it possible
00:07:15
to uh provide exterior spaces in such a situation
00:07:25
oh that the first house is called have to code it's
00:07:30
out some relatively small that's scale and a three hundred square meters
00:07:36
uh and it is um placed in a
00:07:41
small street next to typical houses and it's um
00:07:48
uh on two floors this is the lower floor
00:07:53
uh with the you this is the street you want to hear living area
00:07:59
and you can call up here
00:08:02
the master bedroom around three part from children family and stare
00:08:07
again down if the kitchen dining and living really simple plan
00:08:13
um hum with these covered terrace here roof terrace here and
00:08:24
they meet in the middle know how this whole which goes
00:08:26
through the building and which are the house so the house
00:08:30
is actually a organised around this around this hole in the middle
00:08:36
and we tape who we date actually fill completely the the
00:08:42
uh the uh the building boundary so there's a building boundary
00:08:46
and what we did was to extend the house really to the border the building boundary and then carve out
00:08:53
so we have discovered a terrace here the only
00:08:57
a demand by the apple the regulation war or the
00:09:01
the planning a regulations where that half half of
00:09:06
this elevation was supposed to be in this line here
00:09:11
so we had this this upper half was then then fixed to the line and then
00:09:17
the the rest of it was carved out the idea is that all the exterior spaces
00:09:24
which are used by the house are actually part of the house before the
00:09:28
architecture of the house so the relationship between the house and the uh room
00:09:35
ooh you know far what what the the environment are through with these exterior spaces which are part of the house
00:09:43
so here we have this cartel terrorists here
00:09:47
the roof terrace the who and this the relationship to the to the the
00:09:55
lawn or the the the to run a a round third round the house is
00:10:02
you step out of the house into the on into the into the into the ground
00:10:08
no ours is uh there's no no no indication on all uh would not trying to
00:10:15
make this part of that was really a rupture between it all the main exhibition no the uh uh
00:10:21
extra spaces are just part of the house all so here we have the roof to the the roof terrace
00:10:29
uh which is house this beautiful abuse a shit in
00:10:34
sheltered and the enjoys uh the sound of a south facing
00:10:44
at the entrance uh uh we we when we i think you can say it in
00:10:51
in this house and and some others that is a sequence of entrance is along entrance
00:10:57
and you coming from the north and you approach the house you get and put it
00:11:02
and the longer decaf don't or the house the more light come so this ambiguity which i like a lot the uh
00:11:09
and you are two thirds through the house when you finally and uh and uh
00:11:19
oh come in the enters area here look out there and then the
00:11:24
stairs up and that directly is the first glimpse of the importance of this
00:11:30
of the hole in the house for the organisation of it and threw it
00:11:36
this relatively enclosed but how's on the outside opens completely off on the inside
00:11:42
creates this relationship within the house in a three dimensional way
00:11:47
horizontally vertically diagonally inside outside through spaces exterior and interior
00:11:54
and because really like the you'd like the uh really that
00:11:59
the heart of the house
00:12:04
so this is taken from the out a a patrol looking downwards
00:12:09
two what's the main entrance and the uh and the uh yeah the entrance area roof terrace
00:12:17
small garden and covered terrace so it all comes together and each one point
00:12:25
and in the u. one thing which is very important for the year do this
00:12:31
hole in the middle to work is the circulation in the house they're actually tuesdays
00:12:36
so there's never tap and in a way you could that you cannot go up one side of it down the other
00:12:42
so you can be circulation is around the house around the hole in the middle
00:12:54
um the next one which is still under construction actually is uh we
00:13:03
oh we we do a normally work really close to the track with the clients we that that's really essential for us
00:13:10
and we make the clients understand that the right from the beginning that we this will be allowed long and painful
00:13:17
journey on a small ball but everybody have to roll in the same direction and it'll cause a lot of money
00:13:24
so and so to make sure that they would be with us
00:13:30
this it's like it's a teamwork and this land came to us
00:13:35
and they were really tie rack and we are not sure in the beginning but then they said ah we want to read house
00:13:45
we don't want any apartment on steroids so they they were really and we thought yeah
00:13:51
we can go we can take them quite far these and so we we developed a ah
00:14:00
a strategy for this house
00:14:02
the uh the pound two of it is by sent to me to really the
00:14:06
limit of how much we were opposed to build it's it's really this at yeah
00:14:15
and then we carved out
00:14:18
and the house is is a that is a plant as a series of rooms
00:14:25
so it's not like ah it's really like uh to be
00:14:29
the precisely defined rooms which are then x. i sampled and
00:14:35
related and with the interior exterior spaces different levels on
00:14:42
concert connections the that creates the board of the house
00:14:48
so it's carved out courtyard here another one there here roof
00:14:54
terrace courtyard so lot a series of uh the exterior spaces
00:14:58
which are creating will create the relationship with the exterior so you always really you you um
00:15:05
you uh have this relationship with the exterior through these extra spaces
00:15:10
ah a noble it diagonally and in the beginning there was
00:15:16
no when tall accidental facing on the elevations are all facing courtyards
00:15:23
and that we then later on added three windows
00:15:27
but all of them are kind of the not testing the elevation but that placed
00:15:33
on the inside and nobody when there are like some installation like in the kitchen
00:15:39
so the winter which really next to the often show you have like you have the winter the class of the oven
00:15:43
and then the window so it's like you're not really sure the if it's a really i wouldn't all or something that's
00:15:54
so here we have the path this is the ground floor plan a street it sits in a corner plot here
00:16:03
the main entrance here
00:16:06
and it's all the extraneous spaces are trapped with black tinted oh
00:16:12
uh like this one left one roof terrace accept for this one here
00:16:18
so you enter this is it all that or police here you left in
00:16:20
and you want to this rule which says exterior space is like a small courtyard
00:16:26
a white painted so it's actually treated larson interior space
00:16:30
from there you went to the uh uh the vestibule
00:16:35
and into this go round hole here which is really like the heart
00:16:39
of the of the building so we can like in the last project
00:16:42
you've been going through these big like that into this covered space courtyard vestibule or so
00:16:48
you travel almost the you get two thirds into the building when you really your yeah
00:16:55
next to that is the dining room and the kitchen connected with these uh with this terrace you can is the
00:17:03
exit here the the kitchen connected with this morning terrace and
00:17:09
joyce nice beautiful a morning sun and the evening sun here
00:17:14
and from here you step up this around here not sorry here
00:17:20
into the living room
00:17:22
and from that is the master bedroom bathroom enclosed courtyard bedroom balcony
00:17:30
and study so this can actually all would be like
00:17:33
a one huge uh a master suite with studio went living
00:17:39
uh from here you can i exit here step up to
00:17:42
this roof terrace go down here again into this terrace here
00:17:47
or i can't down here we're land here in the garden in from positive to spectrum here and out to the wrong
00:17:55
so it's like it's like a never ending connections and different ways of routes through the building
00:18:03
creating a all sorts of the racial connections between spaces
00:18:10
and always you have this relationship between the
00:18:14
x. the x. their interior is through the spaces
00:18:18
so says no it's never like directly on the elevation of the house
00:18:23
and here like in the kitchen window seats here in the installation in the dining here or
00:18:29
in the uh study in the book shelves so stay in the classes in face of the installations
00:18:38
the building is all the houses all its latin cotton steel uh
00:18:43
one bit referring to this one where it's bill is like an whack plant uh and uh
00:18:53
but this this the the yeah the um the there is this course the these discourse ten envelope
00:18:59
and for example here one that is is opening its just an
00:19:03
opening in the envelope it's not the window it's just an opening
00:19:09
is this one here
00:19:12
so it appears to be a window but when you come closer and you look uh diagonally
00:19:17
you start to see scan through the building you see the sky through maybe through the uh
00:19:22
it's standing here looking through the living room through this quarter into this guy here
00:19:28
so it's like it's it's getting these this sense of depth
00:19:31
and and uh and uh and the body of the building
00:19:38
and so these windows with this it's quite a very deep in in the elevation of this one as well
00:19:43
and here we have the uh the uh the uh the courtyards and the balcony yeah oh
00:19:56
so this is from the dining
00:19:58
through through the terraced into the kitchen through the bit to the window there up into the living and the whole
00:20:08
and this is the living room with a hole in the in the in front of the your building
00:20:15
you can access to step up to the roof terrace the so this the uh the wall the ads
00:20:22
the courtyard here this is the entrance courtyard so this is the entrance to other so look out
00:20:27
right up to the uh to the living room and this adds is the uh ads in the uh
00:20:33
in the ceiling of the living room so actually these in
00:20:36
spatial terms their living rooms living room goes extends of the
00:20:43
this is the uh the but most the most the bedroom the only winter actually
00:20:48
for in the bedroom is just through this the courtyard is open to this guy
00:20:59
it's on site it's been on site for quite a while and will still be but hopefully next year it'll be finished
00:21:11
uh the last house in the series is uh
00:21:17
in a in a situation very similar situation almost the same
00:21:22
uh sits in the corner of of of of the end of a of a good stark oh
00:21:27
i'm very big five hundred square meters uh and
00:21:32
the i cannot approach in that it's similar way uh
00:21:38
where
00:21:40
we were dealing with very difficult situ of both situation and the regulations
00:21:47
where we had to raise the house this had the main
00:21:50
floor how to be at this level here or actually approximately there
00:21:56
so it's almost like it's like almost two meters from from from street up to the main level of the house
00:22:03
uh right in the beginning the the client wanted to have um the
00:22:09
some series of rich and with the functional exteriors basis
00:22:15
uh uh uh be just thought well in this kind of situation is not the obvious thing to do
00:22:22
but with um
00:22:24
we managed to to provide them with different kinds of the
00:22:28
upstairs bases all of which have but the but it different
00:22:32
the different function but all are like in separate the pops in separate
00:22:36
some separate table up past of the uh of the house
00:22:43
it's it's in this like an schools okay yeah so is this year
00:22:48
and it's organised in it's in in such a way that it provides ah enclosed
00:22:54
courtyard winter gotten raised lawn and sunken courtyard and the entrance area as well here
00:23:04
so this is the main floor
00:23:07
this is the entrance area here walk up here and trends
00:23:13
so this kitchen area family living rooms that rooms yeah all
00:23:20
organised around to see the the the this this courtyard here
00:23:26
and the kitchen with the which was very important for them is between these this is a
00:23:31
courtyard and the winter garden so this is covered with like uh you can open it up here
00:23:38
uh and connected with the role on the lawn is race
00:23:44
along that is has the same level us this for or
00:23:47
meaning about the uh the proportion of of the lawn and it's situation is not work sitting in
00:23:53
between these houses really uh you can buy it but let raced up so you can have this
00:24:00
completely different relationship to the two words the what's the sky and towards
00:24:05
the uh to the words to this small views which you have here
00:24:10
i
00:24:14
uh actually it's the it's the uh the main the main through war is
00:24:21
like a box sitting on this plane from the space at this base is about
00:24:26
uh dealing with the uh the the intonation of
00:24:30
of the of the ground making this horizontal um base
00:24:37
and you you this is the entrance area and this courtyard is
00:24:45
kind of open and kind of closed so it's not really like ascent
00:24:48
concorde that in the middle of a house but the house wraps around
00:24:52
it and does not really touch so it's like really makes this tension
00:24:57
uh at this point the arteries and turns point and this actually is revolting panel
00:25:03
which can be opened up so you can actually you can enter the courtyard if you like to fly like to
00:25:11
this is the winter gotten and the and the sunken courtyard here
00:25:16
so the winter garden can be opened up like that and with a look alike to
00:25:21
which the a sliding doors to the living a room another one to the kitchen so this
00:25:30
this is like an added the room to the house where the tiny
00:25:34
and the kitchen kind of meat in the summer and and the winter
00:25:39
and this is seen from the entrance where you have
00:25:44
like this a sliding door next to the courtyard and
00:25:49
the sliding doors to the winter garden kitchen and living
00:25:55
stares down to the ground uh this is the entrance from the double and trans
00:26:00
on top of each other secondary and primary and the meat in the entrance area
00:26:07
and
00:26:09
i think the beauty of the of the courtyard is that it it is in the middle of the house and it
00:26:14
it separates it organised it's really the heart of the build of the house it separates
00:26:20
and unified at the same time and it's like this layers of the living room
00:26:25
a car it or exterior courtyard corridor that room
00:26:31
so things are separated without enclosing them is without shutting them off
00:26:37
so the uh the life life of the house everyday life of
00:26:41
the house function through kind of through the uh through this courtyard
00:26:47
and like in terms of sound for example you don't hear the thing
00:26:51
what's happening here when extending the advice was uh been done all of this
00:26:57
this is like a three need to ceiling height and this that like sliding doors for sliding doors open
00:27:03
it completely off the courtyard so the courtyard in the summertime becomes really look a part of the house
00:27:13
and the uh this is the entrance door to the main bathroom or the
00:27:16
master bedroom bedrooms and bathrooms out into the courtyard you have this sliding doors
00:27:26
and here's the a revolving panel open
00:27:31
and you have this claims out from up into the uh a neighbour
00:27:42
the materials are the places kind of the really rough
00:27:46
concrete exposed concrete just as it appears from the contractors
00:27:51
uh but the box on top has this fine detail uh on passing which like p. valid sink
00:27:59
at all details kind of really been measured down
00:28:08
and the uh details of
00:28:10
uh for some handrails really apply directly to the concrete really simple way
00:28:17
and then you have it on the inside we the same way but be
00:28:21
more kind of work done and for all kind of thinking and finely tuned
00:28:31
uh
00:28:33
one important thing for us uh uh is is the the supplant the
00:28:39
planning the function of the uh of the uh of of of buildings
00:28:44
in all of these houses that was really the one of the key kind of factors
00:28:49
how how was the what how was the flow how was the how
00:28:53
are the connections how was it to live that how does it work and
00:28:58
at the same time kind of with this rich speciality and and and uh and uh
00:29:05
connections to the to the exterior world this is a competition we did two years ago
00:29:12
as like a elderly people form and small fishing religion and the stove in iceland
00:29:19
it's actually it was very kind of non role program difficult uh it's
00:29:27
like a three kind of department uh three department uh a whole uh
00:29:36
we where we had to provide them with a little different kinds of exterior spaces quarter ton cartons
00:29:43
uh and
00:29:45
um oh
00:29:49
we managed to plan
00:29:52
they were really strict on square meters by to by definition and the what
00:29:59
the t. eight with with the speed it up in these three parties here
00:30:04
one two three each of them has a living room
00:30:09
each of them has a courtyard each of them has a carton
00:30:13
uh and each of them has a winter gotten all of which are kind of finely tuned together
00:30:19
and the all the uh the plan here is that all of the
00:30:23
uh uh so this is like a one unit for one person here
00:30:28
and joyce views without being like faced with the adjacent
00:30:32
department so they like have like this one looks this way or that way so like outlook out words
00:30:39
in the end of this corridor there's this winter garden which can then be opened up
00:30:44
and this is this is the living room and this
00:30:48
is the enclosed courtyard soul between the carton and the
00:30:54
courtyard there is a living room the same here here courtyard and the carton and they live in between them
00:31:01
at the summit kind of together you can open up between here and you have this courtyard and the garden
00:31:08
i'd always this winter garden in the end at the end of the so
00:31:14
this relationship between the interior and the exterior of having the
00:31:19
uh exterior us really inseparable part of the of the apple thing
00:31:27
is like a is gonna be put into the pull it through the extremes the
00:31:35
we have like these enclosed a courtyard
00:31:42
a courtyard next to this living room connected with the uh with the carton
00:31:49
one side they have this like flat kind of very very flat you know has to be very many flower garden
00:32:00
and the other side update more robust kind of nature
00:32:04
where the or so the uh the building is providing a different
00:32:09
kind of uh of various bases within and outside of the building
00:32:17
be
00:32:19
one of the fields with the working asset is the aft maybe do several kind of small uh to uh
00:32:27
small and large uh arts interiors of them at this house we did for a a private
00:32:35
i've collected this was supposed to be a he's living abroad pretty comes occasionally comes to iceland
00:32:42
and he wanted to have like a holiday whole reception house and for his private collection
00:32:51
um
00:32:52
when we first got uh
00:32:55
it it was really really strange the uh there was a german
00:32:58
actually the german engineer who built it just after the second world war
00:33:04
and it was it was a really made of concrete we we uh it was
00:33:08
a everyone all the walls the the boards between rooms everything was made of concrete
00:33:15
and it was like like a series of small rooms and it was really hard to understand
00:33:19
and but we saw the uh we saw the possibility and the uh how the what we could do something there
00:33:27
so we just we take out forty tones of concrete and we opened it up
00:33:33
and this was about you know re planning is really planning
00:33:38
the house and what we set for this house was about
00:33:44
giving making the house what it wanted to be actually both in terms
00:33:48
of the function of what how little spirit and where it was located
00:33:54
really on the seaside on the outskirts of reykjavik
00:33:59
uh but then the first thing we did only wall we raised actually was this one
00:34:06
so this is seen from when you enter and we it was a long struggle to to persuade the a
00:34:11
client that we had to build the wall when you come in and what not have the uh beautiful views
00:34:19
but this one was about this hole in the ceiling here because
00:34:22
the the the house was really like one two very like really
00:34:27
a like a super post froze external relationship between them and that
00:34:31
sort of in i mean very for kind of space your a sense
00:34:39
uh so we did this hole in the ceiling which became kind of
00:34:43
the centre piece of the house creating this kind of spatial a feeling
00:34:51
and at the same time uh space with no put pose no
00:34:57
kind of practical purpose just just just uh but everything passes through there
00:35:04
so this is the whole yeah seen this is the kitchen
00:35:08
seen the cotton shows like framing so from from here
00:35:12
you see views the carton and this year to the sea
00:35:17
kitchen either steps down
00:35:21
this this this project was a project where everything was kind of design did was
00:35:27
you we went quite far in that we this is the first time we design our
00:35:33
a refrigerator
00:35:36
but you know it's it is possible but is so we did a three of them actually
00:35:41
um for this mine
00:35:44
and then we opened up into the basement the base
00:35:47
model source to really kind of small room storage nothing
00:35:52
at the same time the hat is this interview had these terrorists with which is
00:35:56
it's like a it's like you can say in iceland a really a hawk part
00:36:01
uh but uh really sheltered and and uh and just a lot of sound
00:36:09
so we created a family room in the basement or in the lower floor actually with the card and and this terrace
00:36:19
and again no the really simple kind of materials limestone wall not
00:36:27
and stainless steel maybe basically white walls and then just
00:36:32
this this piece here we decided to have it like all
00:36:36
uh this is like all made of eight millimetres thick steve and finally decided
00:36:41
that it would should be untreated it just like just like a rough d.
00:36:46
some reality
00:36:49
and then this is the main is the entrance door so this ever changing light
00:36:57
yeah and actually one of the most beautiful artwork and is
00:37:00
it going in his collections collection was he actually by um
00:37:06
uh i don't think uh of this contract not robots doctor a woman in
00:37:10
the mid sixties uh so you can see here actually this so she crushes class
00:37:19
but she sticks on the uh on the wall and this is crushed christoph yeah
00:37:25
on this side much finer so this reflection of the light ever changing and really rich
00:37:31
and this relationship between the uh architecture and art is quite strong there
00:37:43
uh also we've done uh recently with it is a a commercial art gallery
00:37:51
it's in the uh centre of reykjavik by the harp across the harbour in an old warehouse up
00:38:01
and it's quite successful a calorie presenting lot of important artist
00:38:07
um and it they need they they needed to expand table in a in a timely building tiny house
00:38:15
and they're needed expand both they needed more kind of
00:38:18
bigger exhibition space but also the uh like the uh uh
00:38:23
the working area and meeting rooms and such so uh
00:38:28
it was kind of a although this was the main space quite
00:38:33
really it's like something like eight by eight meters ceiling height four and a half or so
00:38:39
really a nice exhibition space and it was made in such a way that
00:38:43
these walls are actually all fake so we can go behind on the boards for installations wiring
00:38:50
and so on so to really kind of it really functioning quite well as a also exhibition space
00:38:57
and uh behind you have the supporting spaces so the rest reception here kitchen behind the
00:39:06
if
00:39:08
this is the reception and behind this class two or is the offices
00:39:13
or the working areas for the and and the uh and the storage up
00:39:19
yeah
00:39:20
uh and in this case i can we went quite foreign
00:39:24
t. telling a tape pulls and installations or kind of designed
00:39:30
and presenting the colour we wanted to present this element you know really uh in
00:39:36
the outcome of calories the really like they're out there working on the international scene
00:39:41
uh and the about the same time we wanted to have the uh the back of it really really rough
00:39:49
so we we know almost did nothing there we just added some even the wiring of the lights is just like
00:39:58
as little as possible and the vied for the uh computers and stuff it's just like that so i think it's
00:40:05
it's quite important that you are when you are working the with with the this is the uh this is the uh
00:40:11
the uh a temporary stories they have like all the store it's just like a somewhere
00:40:15
else in the town but we want to be didn't want them to work in a gallery
00:40:22
they should have like a proper working space different working space not like
00:40:26
sitting almost like dress cold in a in a in a white white room
00:40:41
and this is the stores here they can be opened up completely these are the old warehouse stores
00:40:47
out onto the street so when openings in the summer it's kind of a can open it up it's really nice
00:40:57
um
00:40:59
what the show to uh um to competitions with it in in in a in an open situation
00:41:09
um it's first one is an extension to library in in a small town next to next to
00:41:15
reykjavik uh this is this here these two boxes
00:41:21
is the uh x.'s thing um existing the library
00:41:25
this is really just hi amy isn't all it's it's an old the bill
00:41:29
it's actually the tiny like a residential street but this is like a public square
00:41:38
the cinema and uh and the and the and the city hall close by
00:41:43
and there's a the difference of the uh height as like a one story from there to the
00:41:50
uh and we wanted to somehow talk to both sides
00:41:56
file a building this cap there's always been a cap it really
00:41:59
a strange want to build this cap here and at the same time
00:42:05
a built up a like civic building on the square
00:42:11
uh we took it quite directly so we just picked up
00:42:15
the uh alignments of this strangely placed houses on the street
00:42:20
yeah i
00:42:22
creating these kind of four boxes so on this side
00:42:26
there was supposed to pick up the alignment of the street
00:42:31
but at least site here it became was supposed to
00:42:34
be calm ah like a warm strangely form building mass
00:42:39
raised from the ground because of the uh because of the the height difference between these flaws here
00:42:49
uh
00:42:50
this is this just like a typical uh my peripheral
00:42:55
with the euro store it's in the old library and reading
00:42:59
rooms and like this the main library in the uh in
00:43:04
the uh in the old one all planted really really kind
00:43:08
of classical ways are supposed to be like a classical our library
00:43:14
with this this in the middle
00:43:17
so this is the main entrance very can see how this is the height difference actually so this is the uh
00:43:25
this is the uh this this mass soloist yet this brought
00:43:28
this side it has this kind of appearance of ascetic building
00:43:34
but the backside it's really kind of picking up the scale of the houses adjacent to it
00:43:42
has this difference k. so this this box is kind of sitting there
00:43:52
interiors completely just books
00:43:56
all made of will not that's maybe why we we didn't when i don't know quite expensive but oh
00:44:03
and this this uh_huh
00:44:10
um another project in a in a quite tense open situation is the proportions proposal
00:44:16
for the uh uh uh uh i said like i get any of the arts
00:44:23
to actually as shoots program
00:44:28
it it's the this is the side here
00:44:32
this year about and the
00:44:37
we were really kind of
00:44:40
stroking if we should participate in competition or not but we just felt we should
00:44:47
but isn't at the same time the decision to have the cola asked colours there we were
00:44:53
opposed to it it just it was really really squeezing it in some eighteen thousand square meters
00:45:00
and the tool to have to give the schools some livable spaces
00:45:06
and good building something had to give and that meant probably the city
00:45:14
um
00:45:16
we yep
00:45:20
it is kind of the building the scale of this project is such that you can argue that
00:45:25
it's not it's not like a building it's actually possible cities like a it's like a city block
00:45:32
and we decided to treat it is such a way to have this low what part
00:45:40
picking up the uh the street uh really building the street the power pits of the adjacent buildings
00:45:48
and there were all the public functions of this cough the art academy
00:45:54
library concert halls theatre because the attack at any we have their
00:45:59
uh design architecture music dance theatre and find out all mixed together
00:46:06
uh so all of this was supposed to be these public outgoing kind of functions
00:46:13
and on top of that you would have this roof space ruth's cape call it
00:46:18
it's a bit like it's bit like these all these kind of groove sometimes these rules are
00:46:24
like on two floors with two levels so we would have this kind of roof cape here
00:46:32
where all the private or private time means like studios of students would be
00:46:40
it was built on a so this is the main pelting it has and turns here
00:46:46
main entrance then another entrance on the on the list uh next week on the next
00:46:52
for war also there's like a one for one uh one fraud type difference between here
00:46:58
and so all of these are kind of these these
00:47:02
big rooms have various library a restaurant and so on
00:47:09
oh no
00:47:12
oh i um so this is the oops
00:47:17
so this kind of this is the relationship between those two streets this is the release shape really um
00:47:25
section through here
00:47:28
where we have these series of ramps and inclined cartons
00:47:33
so next to this inclined street so with the this is
00:47:37
really like the main public root of travelling through the building
00:47:42
here next to the television
00:47:45
cafes yeah theatre there so this is where everything is happening
00:47:51
and they go up on these cotton here
00:47:56
and on the upper floors are studio's really
00:47:58
kind of act danced a a dance to plant
00:48:04
uh this is like this is the music but we have to have all this kind
00:48:09
of private rehearsal rooms and this is a
00:48:13
a design and and architecture this is fine arts
00:48:19
and in the middle of it they're all connected with
00:48:22
this second uh a root of a circulation which goes from
00:48:30
uh no we froze up through the building but it's it's it's like the internal circulation
00:48:37
running here
00:48:39
through the uh through the building all the way up
00:48:44
we we sometimes thought that we should have have this building one story lower
00:48:51
and actually we could have placed some of these rooms so because this is this is the theatre department
00:48:59
and they asked for a lot of like black boxes like a rehearsal
00:49:03
rooms for the students and we could've taken them every couldn't place them here
00:49:10
but in a way we kind of we want to do show the the
00:49:13
attacker demanded you re that um this was just too big a and also
00:49:21
because we didn't want to give the theatre students
00:49:25
some rehearsal rooms in minors to one minus three
00:49:30
and the first thing when they would call out of this black box they would hit like our
00:49:36
uh they would have to take two steps up to get a light the proper daylight and uh and some oxygen
00:49:43
so these i don't know it's gonna be pure was god be upstairs so was this it it is quite tall
00:49:55
so this is the uh these are the uh of this no the uh students uh studios and all the kind of uh
00:50:03
communal uh functions of the studios like
00:50:07
class rooms and predicting areas and so on
00:50:11
uh next to this kind of spine which goes through the through the building
00:50:18
and this is the main shopping street enter in reykjavik
00:50:22
well we have the
00:50:24
yeah so this is this is all public at least roof a a
00:50:29
huge roof containing all the studios and the private uh facilities of the students
00:50:38
um the last project i want to show is a is a college with it uh
00:50:44
the it's in a small relates a north of reykjavik
00:50:50
some one hour strive to be the typical will it's i think we'll h.
00:50:55
uh when the houses are completely randomly placed is just like you place a
00:51:02
house and then comes the street that follow sometimes it follows after sometimes more
00:51:07
uh but you know it's like i want my how to turn this way but
00:51:11
i want to talk to my house this way and you know okay well no
00:51:16
uh and then we had this this uh this uh this side this was this is likely which used
00:51:23
to be the sports ground of this will it but there's not any more they have built another one elsewhere
00:51:31
uh and this site is quite particular uh it is a beautiful view bush
00:51:38
uh this is like this this mountain here is like the uh it's on
00:51:42
i mean it's it's it's the uh pry of the religious uh this see
00:51:49
and these rocks and these rocks are quite particular they are almost like brown golden in colour
00:51:59
and the reason for that is um you normally when you
00:52:03
have interruption what kind of corruption the level of iran goes down
00:52:10
button under certain under certain comes a conditions the level of
00:52:13
i don't goes up this is what happens in this area so
00:52:18
this is actually just like a rest that rocks that just like is that like a rest so when you if you break
00:52:24
a rock like that i like it is broken then it's actually black on the inside to the surface which is like rested
00:52:31
and is ever changing actually quite good for that's something we really really quite particular in this area
00:52:40
also these rocks are then covered with a of kind of just dry vegetation
00:52:48
really uh it's like a mouse and the some blackberries really thin really try
00:52:56
um and this almost kind of file are
00:52:59
important kind of a drive in our project
00:53:06
uh
00:53:08
the school is placed really next to one of these rocks
00:53:13
it's a organised by some boxes which operate like the houses of the when it's
00:53:20
just placed kind of almost like randomly but between them is always something interesting happening
00:53:26
and together they for the the form a some sort of our unity uh
00:53:33
this is so the main entrance is here uh this is a library
00:53:39
classroom actually out a classroom which can be separate in three a classroom
00:53:44
a working room it's a really small college of like two hundred to two hundred forty students and this is the main
00:53:51
uh like our all our the uh like uh some sort of a assembly
00:53:57
and this building actually is both like a college and a
00:54:01
community centre or like a a cultural centre for the relates
00:54:06
so we decided we didn't want to them to we didn't want to give them ah college
00:54:12
which was like a part of a common descent and war with it we want to get the
00:54:16
feeling that when you go to a concert that you were going to a concert in the college
00:54:21
somehow kind of make that make it work both ways depending on what
00:54:25
was happening in the building so all the so all of this is
00:54:30
working hours the uh asked the uh community centre with the uh it
00:54:35
it can be opened up the the this room seating here could actually there
00:54:41
you like a cloak sometime this year so it's really so this is the public part of it at
00:54:46
the same time when you commit to school you experience this as a school of this is the canteen
00:54:51
so it's really kind of working in both ways as a psycho colours and and the community centre
00:54:57
on the upper floor
00:55:00
we
00:55:02
have the this is offices and classrooms and group rooms and this
00:55:07
is like a double ceiling height of the of the of the auditorium
00:55:11
uh that we carve out uh some of these areas here are outside areas
00:55:20
so when this building is kind of wrap it in this
00:55:25
ca copper a couple bras are law a couple to sing colour code grass uh
00:55:32
by cutting it here
00:55:35
this ad goes up if the uh how with this form of these blocks
00:55:41
and creating different relationship between the interior and exterior which is your unit so
00:55:48
and this is the uh this is the basement so these are the students facilities
00:55:53
and because of its like uh
00:55:57
it's a community centre here is like a some sort of autographed distant trains
00:56:00
here delivery for the scene there so we can actually shut off the school
00:56:06
and only and to there and go down into the basement
00:56:10
but we're students facilities are these uh like technical room storage
00:56:17
so here we have like this so this is the whole of the of the of the building cut
00:56:21
out here giving these different relationship with with the
00:56:25
exterior and echoing this how which compost as a building
00:56:34
it's forming to kind of course or like
00:56:37
exterior spaces yeah he enters area and the uh
00:56:43
the outset area related to the auditorium and the and the uh and the lobby
00:56:51
and sitting there in the scale of the of the rocks
00:56:56
in uh in the colours of of of the rocks and this material of the of the
00:57:00
building is kind of it's eighteen and developing and ever changing a bit like the rocks around it
00:57:10
so this is the uh the enters a area
00:57:16
and on the other side you have this
00:57:19
kind of uh uh uh uh exterior space which can be you
00:57:25
can exit from there so this is actually the back of the auditorium
00:57:30
it's it's close to the rock so between this this
00:57:33
building and the rockies this shelter space sunny and warm
00:57:39
and you can exit from the uh basement area where you have the students facilities
00:57:51
and the form kind of sometimes opens off to see through is like seeing through the building in a strange way
00:58:00
and on the roof we have the same sort of the the same rocks which you have broken so this
00:58:07
the colour of the roof is is getting more brown and brown it's in the beginning it was black
00:58:14
so it's like that's maturing and developing and changing something
00:58:18
really important for us and will normally when we using
00:58:22
true choosing and using materials is the beauty of the terror and where
00:58:28
you know the use of materials when they use things are used
00:58:32
they chains and they get itself carefully chosen unsuitable
00:58:36
for the function they become more more beautiful actually
00:58:42
and from there from move to the facilities this kind of pride is is is frame it
00:58:50
and the building pulls back to to give you to be the mountain
00:58:56
and on the ground floor between the uh between these blocks
00:59:02
of of of uh of uh classrooms in these huge windows
00:59:08
and we decided to have them to take the tape detail
00:59:12
them in a huge way sword like big chunky frame around them
00:59:17
and on this floor you can actually goal right next to the window and look outside and
00:59:23
you don't see nothing of the building your your views are kind of really wide and open
00:59:29
but on the floor up on the floor above where it sat back it's packed like assume lands there you have
00:59:37
the relationship between the building the view was framed by the building in which you were placed and due
00:59:45
look at the uh this vegetation directly related to the
00:59:49
switch station but by pulling us back you control the views
00:59:55
so you see you don't see the rocks below to see what station on top so
01:00:01
so that's kind of but in the really say almost the same location in the building
01:00:07
giving different views on the same thing around it
01:00:12
so these kind of
01:00:14
uh grooves with the balcony the solicited teaches a lounge with the balcony there
01:00:22
and the corridor here we can see through with here
01:00:26
and it opens up this this break between a different part of the building
01:00:34
it's well this composition is it like a hole or is it separate is it
01:00:38
like it's really dancing on a thin line between being a a kind of a
01:00:46
the whole thing or broken up
01:00:52
and these kind of relationship we laugh that you kind of you experiment and your
01:00:58
experience to your own building in which you are placed in of like uh no not
01:01:04
most people in in like in many ways you see it here and you see the reflection of the building
01:01:10
in your building what is it like i i've this uh on this in this era is it
01:01:15
like amount basic building or is it actually more so this is this kind of question is still open
01:01:22
for your user on this kind of reflecting the uh the composition of the uh
01:01:28
off the off the off the building of these boxes kind of creating these interesting relationship between them
01:01:38
and on the inside you have the uh on the corridor areas
01:01:43
it's really kind of solid blocks of concrete like us to read
01:01:48
uh
01:01:50
opening up and cool and and then closing to what's abuse should or own always kind of a
01:01:57
place to not a regular wait a managing to to direct them to search for fusion clothes and others
01:02:07
and opening up like in the three dammit diamonds in a way you have the view to the sky
01:02:13
and the light pouring in from the uh south facing window and back of the auditorium
01:02:24
and
01:02:26
in the materials whatever there is not a concrete in it going in the uh in the uh in the corridor years they're just like
01:02:34
q. or interest your white tiles fifteen by fifteen gift with no joint just placed
01:02:39
on a more basic like the on the ground just like just as a protection
01:02:45
and the rough speech
01:02:48
and uh in the ceiling we managed to have with this iraqi regular kind of ceiling
01:02:54
with non no uh no uh non uh already uh or didn't dating ceiling which
01:02:59
was quite important we managed to get rid of all the technical stuff from the uh
01:03:05
corridor areas so we didn't have any sense but they seem to get fixed
01:03:12
and this like all this deal is something like is really rough still fifty millimetres
01:03:17
thick and just off the shelf from the uh from the from the craftsman and just
01:03:25
kind of quite the direct and solid ready to be used for a long time
01:03:33
but on the inside in the uh in the uh
01:03:37
classrooms it's all kind of like all solid all wooden floors
01:03:45
i'm almost like an old room with a sporting porch six got imports like about
01:03:54
uh frames around the windows of all and the white is not really wide this with
01:03:59
off white really like warm kind of a classical a classroom from of an old school
01:04:11
to have these like skirting boards here and frame kind of around
01:04:15
to build around the house and not on t. sorry wanted a divorce
01:04:20
and all this is kind of solid rock
01:04:27
um
01:04:29
the uh the auditorium can be opened up
01:04:35
and actually when we were doing when we're doing the uh
01:04:40
what worked what to decide uh what kind of far folding what we're gonna use exactly we
01:04:47
hate folding was you always have this kind of
01:04:50
separations between the panels which always like with simple
01:04:55
idea don't you never know if affording ones aboard what is it like our installation is a
01:05:00
series of tours it's and that it's always like plastic it's it's really kind of a strange thing
01:05:07
uh at that time the client was like consistently
01:05:10
asking for callers we need some colours in this building
01:05:14
you providing us with like a grey and it's like really soft on building when we we want some colours
01:05:20
and we decided we would disk we would like um discussed asked with a
01:05:26
with our artist who's kind of really it's been working with colours for a long time
01:05:33
and to be set can do something about it can do we can you give us some colours in the building and
01:05:38
he pointed out the folding was that was that a sporting what okay give me the drawing of the whole thing was
01:05:45
ah so what it the eight instead of we then we thought the
01:05:49
mit would like to some callers like the plans would have looked different colours
01:05:54
but the ad it like mm all this callers so every panel has six different colours
01:06:01
and the separations between the pilots disappears completely
01:06:06
so it's like really like a striped thing
01:06:10
is it very beautiful and give this a rich colours in the building
01:06:17
but you can then you open it up you put you fall people use some of them are the volume or someplace here or there
01:06:24
and the the uh auditorium can then be extended to the into the lobby
01:06:32
and in the auditorium
01:06:34
you have what is open it's not only open to lobby but it's really open to the
01:06:39
exterior here and on the other side it opens to the uh and to the uh enters area
01:06:46
so it's when you're standing on the stage you see the c. and you see the village
01:06:50
is ready likes really standing in the middle of the sports ground which used to be that
01:06:57
and with this guy
01:07:02
and the
01:07:08
and the callers what's interesting
01:07:11
uh about the you know the way we use the callers is that
01:07:16
it's all in the it's on the room it's the auditorium which is
01:07:19
lit which is the house the striped walls but at the same time
01:07:25
it gives the callers to was outside so it is possible to visual
01:07:29
effect or the uh is the visual expression of the building without being directly
01:07:35
part of the elevation and that's appears also only a sony main
01:07:42
to main courtyard on on the entrance area which is this one
01:07:46
and the uh terrace on that one it has there's a test up
01:07:51
is is the relationship with the outside and not only the building between
01:07:54
the building and outside but between re they have to fit the really
01:07:58
the interior to what's the outside you know both both near and far
01:08:05
thank you
01:08:21
oh
01:08:26
it's
01:08:35
but i think it still apple or no oh
01:08:41
the measles ooh well let's see oh i see
01:08:46
i i don't uh in uh you know the the the the
01:08:51
one that that i wasn't it and it's all gonna all the yeah
01:08:56
was still see i i that's me
01:09:02
i think we all of it all completely cities all cities on a little bit
01:09:08
'cause on the proposal portals at the political level inputs interval killer the pro comp a problem law
01:09:14
let's as a as a a local c. c. on what you wanna see on uh the
01:09:20
the c. on the complete a controllable sarah say some some marks
01:09:26
madison's a bad special show mid cities was it's
01:09:29
a comp only transmittal a simple would you see today
01:09:34
to to to to to go to school but the only thing
01:09:37
that i did not that yeah i it's just unreal to wave band
01:09:42
i i don't
01:09:46
it's wise advice um why to do at home or away but the money
01:09:53
then it will force the advances there was an an all small
01:09:56
i have the august a a second kid pope sack can clearly
01:10:04
oh i like that that i think is legit yeah uh_huh and
01:10:09
and it's all oh i i think uh let's stick with it but
01:10:13
of that yeah yeah we get and uh that's the end of it said to toll does also listens with the
01:10:21
whole battle to to to to to some battle a
01:10:24
place and a couple on war to to specifics on wall
01:10:31
that's good that way so the the these on the the
01:10:34
in the the the weights apology p. somewhat comes uh yep that's a
01:10:39
low cost them to define them out to c. t. v.s anyway right
01:10:44
the results as a little bit more this talk to do to ms on these loans to sits in the battle
01:10:51
i think it though and we message on the on the uh no bounds no ponies long
01:10:57
not is only a little bit the battle sender family does on and they had button a materialist on the orbit
01:11:04
that's good on about war about that's here people transporting last year these or what about those uh so good yeah
01:11:10
i think that's not ah that's a bummer snow oh edition place on put a little bit also that control the to
01:11:18
i like it takes hours so much power soap on the piece on on
01:11:22
that isn't says in the seasons to see a example small to was on the
01:11:29
but don't hear you hear someone before it's 'cause they
01:11:33
know not it's it's it's a this is all just see
01:11:38
and complement only well away right now well known almost a cool shovels than it is less it assists in the
01:11:45
cold right that's a a says you have to learn that this was in a snappy detect use one crime all uh
01:11:52
he's on the the the p. d. p. c. require the fair to pass on mount to
01:11:55
fit the complete peace you messenger is also does not be tape and they did the button
01:12:02
secondly limits on the premier loopholes law that record
01:12:06
even most of it is that you most of the activities on the task we're
01:12:12
that's the final uh these on the the the the uh that's yell at all
01:12:19
set off for the next one t. peak demand tie o. uh cause distances just myself and support for the talk to the
01:12:28
yeah to complicate matters no sense just sit so to the stability
01:12:35
i think that's the way
01:12:41
when you went with anything you want
01:12:44
not in a normal person to say common why no this one yeah yeah yeah the these all
01:12:55
yeah okay so in contests alls and uh the the come on each of limits on it
01:13:01
i said part non onset pulse on the missiles as your technique
01:13:06
appears that way is only the person is so normal uh um let's
01:13:11
jump to show foss said beauty of markham stuff can come so to
01:13:17
said it no short on column is what people are simple you know men tosses the depression plastic go
01:13:23
it's only only wanted the article ever been circular these on
01:13:27
the the sustainability of two sources to come by a whole but
01:13:33
that this was as a seventy materials it ensures a particular yes and it's
01:13:37
in the transport collecting materials he shows and to really does on the balloon to
01:13:44
this only the the norm commerce is can can the
01:13:48
forgetful calculations couple got finals compromise here come for that more
01:13:55
just an upper cool little shows
01:13:59
okay so
01:14:03
the system like
01:14:11
oh come on come listened in manson yeah a present it
01:14:21
back in it will know loses ah remote comics tail
01:14:27
uh_huh yeah how my equip the more common man that you uh_huh into pampers that uh the
01:14:34
news do yeah opal packed today and to extend
01:14:39
the ah yeah and that you that's 'cause oh
01:14:44
oh saturday the cat um a permit that i want to but the mall
01:14:49
and and that you know where i can know it
01:14:52
p. is um um with the uh post and the ponce
01:14:58
oh come will uh man and how long can add to buy them having that you want and not you
01:15:06
with them and that you know that oh it's a madame will make
01:15:10
that they both oh yep next don't even at you that's temperament expect them
01:15:16
no it's why does us as a and is in of its it and pam these on the designer
01:15:23
solar discussion all the constable make gone is longer than at the support group
01:15:28
on make long beep on to your key of women to see for that
01:15:33
on downtown to develop a want want to form a it is on
01:15:36
and and and in a in a in a isn't the mm catholic war
01:15:43
cal cal uh not to keep that protege i can alone not to key on the remote fifties on
01:15:50
yellow paschal pull for the the these on the news that and it will leak put in initially
01:15:57
it direct to sign on to come over to share lynette you it it t. let it that way
01:16:04
suppose 'cause a says says it just says set them all the
01:16:07
kitty cat uh uh design it tell you said a lien on
01:16:14
u. t. solemnity at all but if the dominant you a pilot to she
01:16:20
a piece you pause put members the plus imprisonment no on on t. v. we on on part payment death in the
01:16:26
want to costly it want to part too costly no fat on me you do it uh to deduce loaned
01:16:34
problem on the park also your hand to to what that paul focus was on of that they're just coming no sample
01:16:42
that's why i said them the common okay so first compared user come over the plastic
01:16:47
is it to to put on to to be editions it's it's attacking yes is that
01:16:50
was a definite piece and the name of that course national civil appease you post coup
01:16:57
uh
01:16:59
it's a it's a it for one called bison called this is to set the
01:17:04
two so this was a post okay so says headset to simpler let's discuss relative suppose
01:17:09
ability official 'cause 'cause in that you can discuss ellen not you who commas 'cause i'm
01:17:13
not you um keypad digit pushy with this uh but the of a fat suppose good
01:17:20
so the imperial uh to discuss human ponies constitute on
01:17:23
over part pushy proust is on par not to help
01:17:28
one is also comes on on on a party
01:17:31
yes there's i meant no all the the the and click on park
01:17:38
national key at the p. of it simply compactness enough to hope that would
01:17:43
have to talk nationals and last year come on my business or it may
01:17:47
have been involved fairness uproot present to call p. uh which is better to
01:17:54
it uh uh an exile isn't that this is the case
01:17:57
still commas 'cause commas compatible and that you see them so that
01:18:02
to diesel uh sat sampled to definition but i think computers are not doing as
01:18:08
part of that question because actually possesses as big a report was allowed momentum of italy
01:18:23
that gets them
01:18:30
was the cloth what's that's included in missus yeah got the people that when you put them
