00:00:00
yeah thank you
00:00:04
hello everyone get afternoon ah change to a completely different subject
00:00:12
ah first of all my name's young low
00:00:15
um another architect not engineer on the lighting designer
00:00:20
and um my heart attack um who i work
00:00:23
with as a team that collaborative on this project
00:00:27
could not make it she's receiving a on a
00:00:29
fellowship test so that's far more important uh or courier
00:00:34
so today i'm going to present you a case study focus some
00:00:38
um like in design for doubles keen um for us all liking
00:00:43
so on the case study as for a museum
00:00:47
uh in each are museum i'm located in downtown toronto
00:00:52
the university um it's a city you're in your own
00:00:56
home thank their campus is completely open to the street
00:01:01
to the tourist um to be um traffic so so there is
00:01:06
no border interest no boundary art and music and they're they're building
00:01:10
it's for the uh school of image or as well
00:01:13
as for the entire city does that your graphic location
00:01:19
of thought the museum um is a renovation
00:01:22
project if you've photo clots for um the campus
00:01:27
the um building itself um is existing it
00:01:31
was bill and um to early i'm eighteen
00:01:35
the nineteenth century as it completely windowless i'm very pronto
00:01:42
yellow brick warehouse it was a priori before um and it wasn't
00:01:48
designed for classrooms or office or anything about it can't panic purpose
00:01:53
um in the ear tiny sturgeon on to
00:01:56
school in each or um receive of huge donation
00:02:00
for black star collections on those or black and white for for
00:02:05
the graph um um a lot of ah very oh and a precious
00:02:11
for the whole so how to house those
00:02:15
collections um they universally disliked expand that facility
00:02:20
and at a gallery and so these are the
00:02:23
few photos that shows the uh the existing building conditions
00:02:27
um it's very probably so it's very unfriendly um a few option
00:02:32
has been discussed um including demolished in part building and we go
00:02:37
um at the time of thought that design this is
00:02:41
downtown i'm very of robots the heavy traffic heavy this yeah
00:02:47
so did modesty building is not sustainable environmentally so
00:02:54
at the end um and the project team proposed to clad in the building
00:03:00
um and this is inspired by the fact that
00:03:04
the art of photograph it's all about like an
00:03:08
um yep overtime lane can be harmful to other
00:03:12
photographs and how to solve that the landmark become
00:03:15
at the centre of our study at for the feasibility
00:03:19
if as well as for um creating a file icon building
00:03:24
for the street out for the university campus as well as for the c. d. so um
00:03:30
following the on campus master plan study um which
00:03:35
in the first these are itself is very proud of phone making contribution to be a downtown landscapes
00:03:42
um so they or if you kind of noise we need to follow in terms of our design in the building
00:03:48
which including um protecting dour were
00:03:50
collections um including a critique are conic
00:03:54
image for the for the for the uh museum in front of school itself
00:03:59
i'm looking to um this research into a few icon in eugene um
00:04:04
that hot that's use as a or institution as well as um academic purpose
00:04:12
i'm looking to the future possibility of uh how to make the building transparent
00:04:18
yeah the um the like doesn't create i'm not home for source on to
00:04:24
damage the artwork i'm looking to the uh the floor plan in terms of ah
00:04:30
what is so i can be preserved yeah and um what for signing up great and um
00:04:36
you to waste from a traffic standpoint from urban planning same twenty
00:04:41
the but my um test target here we present in the um
00:04:46
the final scheme that oh where did double scheme colossus thought will take place
00:04:55
the early visions of thought building is um translucent um to allow the life
00:05:02
sign out um so that uh that in targeting glow at the beacon um
00:05:09
we're um the classrooms or study space with the house um
00:05:14
those are the space will be um opened up to the campus
00:05:19
as much as possible as a way to bring in the activity from
00:05:23
from the uh from the campus in and allow the interaction
00:05:27
bikini on about the about the building and out the campus
00:05:33
so uh some study has been down by looking into the materials
00:05:38
oh trust lose and i'm afraid to class on acrylic
00:05:43
all the copper and that these are the few example um presence with our lighting in fact
00:05:53
let's go back to the yet often bored and study um the lighting effect for some more
00:05:59
um and establish some of of the lighting design
00:06:02
criteria obviously this is um the light need be
00:06:06
um compact in size so that it can be in tech grow into the about the first saw system
00:06:12
um the fixture need be brought good and durable enough to sustain the cold weather conditions
00:06:18
um the fixture it need to be slain and compact in size he needs to be um
00:06:24
easy to maintain easy to install and above all
00:06:29
um the like in need to be control so that is a good you could it is still be controllable
00:06:34
looking to the options of thought the light fixture um complex ice
00:06:39
um the light up take design need to be um
00:06:43
a asymmetrical um to work without the very minimum space
00:06:47
oh working closely the entire project teen look into the possibility of far
00:06:52
clad in existing part building a with installations that um and yet oh
00:07:00
create this year gap to house the light fixture and about the
00:07:04
light uh to travel back to be um opted to this keen
00:07:09
so this is um in other options that will look into
00:07:14
which uh save some space on different from the first option um i'll
00:07:20
like yes and then she any require space to travel so this
00:07:25
four hundred millimetre created demand market because um that you
00:07:29
can first thought become uh why did they need it
00:07:32
so we're looking to the direct view which is a lot like macho pitch x. allies um
00:07:39
located behind the colossus ah and that a lot of light project
00:07:43
interact onto the about the u. v. over to the side line
00:07:47
i'm looking to we're looking to a few pros and cons um and
00:07:52
lies the difference the caught from the cost from um the maintenance standpoint
00:07:58
um later we decided that the yelling and fixture on works
00:08:03
it more economical as well as well from the like performance standpoint
00:08:09
by using the near fixture we're making each class cannot um
00:08:14
a light pixel um for colourful light yeah i'm i'm
00:08:19
at the end of the day uh we would like to control the like so that
00:08:23
doubt about that part building poetic beacon so this or the few study that shows where
00:08:31
and how the fixtures should be position uh in terms of uh uh in relationship to the top of skin facade
00:08:39
with the fish should do it down and up together so this life
00:08:42
filled up the air gap or economical solution would be um the fixtures closer
00:08:50
to this you can see in in just one fixer upper
00:08:55
pixel which is to uh uh roughly
00:08:59
a hundred millimetre by twenty four hundred millimetre
00:09:07
another a study by looking into a compact size fixer
00:09:11
oh that's fully adjustable with that can be rotate up or down
00:09:15
um so that i'm disputing skin us which serve as the reflector
00:09:21
doesn't reach out it was or hotspot this one week in short that
00:09:24
the antarctic so which uniform and completely even from top to the bottom
00:09:30
um another study um to find out how this fixture
00:09:35
can be accommodated by this building and looked i'll which we work with
00:09:41
eventually you will work with three hundred millimetre which is very very tight
00:09:47
in order to spectral like oh not evenly um we'll look into the uh
00:09:52
the um how to minimise the um number materials clad in the existing brick wall
00:09:59
um obviously the existing brick wall full of texture for the colour
00:10:04
uh inconsistent caller over that a long period of time
00:10:08
and uh the inconsistency in the rough texture doesn't work
00:10:12
friendly with white um it's not a good reflecting materials
00:10:18
so we'll look into a clean yeah i'm
00:10:21
i'm furnished he break surface with new installations
00:10:26
with us some proof waterproof material with substrate ah fastened into the operators
00:10:34
um words on though and vertical structure support
00:10:39
and then the class fasten on to the substructure
00:10:43
and the last layer of material going to complete that i feel the need
00:10:49
for so i guess i'm light fixture so this is in preparation of uh oh
00:10:56
oh don't mock up prior to the construction at this stage um the
00:11:01
the in the first few wasn't convinced that because the nature this is the museum
00:11:06
this is it that coach we stick to she is not a commercial bulletin board
00:11:11
it's not a times square travel like in that what they want to look into so basis to use
00:11:17
what like the only and nothing but white white they're very straight on that a requirement
00:11:24
so we look into the positions and possibility of file what like
00:11:29
'cause what lies less forgiving when it comes to compare what like what colour like
00:11:34
colour like can be distracting so we even if there
00:11:37
is a very minor note up or relations or shallow
00:11:44
the colour like can cover it's like what we see is here in this room
00:11:48
but if all of this colour laser white why then it highlights all of imperfection
00:11:55
all the t. v. o. showing of of the material is going
00:11:58
to get highlighted um all the crickets surface is gonna get highlight it
00:12:03
so um with the white why uh that right away put the entire
00:12:08
design keen on a lower that we need to include the the increase this or
00:12:14
make the fridge patton word to trends trends loosens you pick last word more opaque
00:12:21
um and how to study this is the upwards on the
00:12:23
b. u. on him in preparation for other prick construction markup
00:12:28
look into the corner conditions um where the fixture and the glass substrate you'd be
00:12:34
can't believe are out um how to accommodate that the light fixture need to be on
00:12:40
kendall beaver out as well to accommodate up at the corner condition and make sure there is no
00:12:46
chaparral um t. and car looking need to be glow from end to end included the corner condition
00:12:53
so i'm back to drafting board um and not the computer rendering to make sure that um
00:12:59
the clone the conditions been cats um at the roof conditions been cats
00:13:04
and um the starting point the endpoint of thought that lasts for size being looked after
00:13:10
and i'll then when it to be a a prototype mock up oh two materials has been looking
00:13:17
into with the class as well as one for white lie and the other one for colour light
00:13:23
i'll prob gathering at um a task um before on it goes dark yeah i'm i'm
00:13:30
so instantly um soon as we turn the light on with
00:13:35
white lie and the colour lie side by side it was almost
00:13:41
you could hear the crowd with a wraps like x. celeste that colour like turn on
00:13:48
no but you look into white lie anymore and that including the school principal including the museum directors
00:13:55
so that um to seeing is believing it's um in this case is is this
00:14:03
is a perfect example these are the few of 'em class samples that will look into
00:14:10
the light is looking at this location um the
00:14:13
intensity the collar the wattage of the lights are
00:14:16
exactly the same location and this is a starting
00:14:20
as a review of thought the various that opaque this
00:14:24
another close up view of a different pattern another the
00:14:29
close up look into the um just by the connector
00:14:34
and a closeup view of uh well a light
00:14:37
fixture locations with um the class cannot opens up
00:14:41
i'm just display their connector the light fixture located at the bottom
00:14:47
a few takes away from all the construction mock ups um one eyed and that was on
00:14:58
take note was taking in terms of thought the idea of using each glass panel it's uh like pixel
00:15:05
um has been review and up with the position of uh fixtures
00:15:09
here and here um and stare out through the entire fuss ah
00:15:15
inevitably they will be like leading in between each pixel so
00:15:20
how to prevent that was another lesson learned from the market
00:15:28
so back to drafting bore um do another rendering
00:15:31
um to receive a final approval from the university
00:15:36
um the collective fixture position is doing fine tuning the class um
00:15:43
about the gap between the class and mixes in first thought has been white i'm not
00:15:50
another chronic condition to make sure that uh uh the light has been covered the entire first ah
00:16:03
few mock up review um of what follows that shows that fixed it
00:16:07
can deliver oh at the corner this or light fixtures shane up worked
00:16:15
it's sending the light leakage and um the bleeding between the colour pick so the class pixel
00:16:25
this or if you construction photos that shows the substrate
00:16:30
before the class course install the light fixtures located at this positions
00:16:35
when the class install the even there's it's not quite clear as you can see get greedy and
00:16:40
fate almost to serve for the glass panel and then shout or kirk
00:16:48
this are few diagram that shows the the digital control arm
00:16:52
d. n. x. controller um with fixture connected together
00:16:59
in the broader view of all the construction document where the fixture needy connect
00:17:04
it in the junction box thing control would need to be happening with um
00:17:09
in in someone's in in a diverse group um
00:17:13
in other um inspections that for is the um
00:17:18
well there goes and to the facts here well that goes into the where connections so um it was a
00:17:24
lot of 'em back and for to make sure that the um the design intent was about to leave or
00:17:31
this are the few on constructions shot during a time during my time
00:17:36
a close review of thought each fixture can each glass candle can be control separately
00:17:45
it into your view of of the fixture locations
00:17:52
the complete um the completion that was made in our winter time you know i'm i'm
00:17:58
one of of the snowstorm um that a rounder s. received
00:18:03
yeah i'm a waste standing in the middle for the snow
00:18:06
and program the light on this is the building without the light
00:18:12
is the building without the light l. program and stay on
00:18:16
with a huge well plastic soul program independently to create different colour
00:18:23
so this installation oh i believe it come for that uh
00:18:29
the lighting at a an additional value to looking
00:18:33
for soccer when it's down probably winds down right
00:18:37
and on the project uh get receiving after the installation after the completion
00:18:42
the building receive a couple of design of war but i think the one
00:18:47
that makes the design changed the most probably is the best er in design
00:18:52
and that was voted by the local citizen now nicely
00:18:56
this is everyone's favourite building and that become a landmark in downtown toronto
