00:00:00
thank you
00:00:02
just pop it well alright good afternoon and thank you very much for giving me the opportunity
00:00:07
to talk about a study that i recently conducted with colleagues that on the university
00:00:13
over the last ten years i've been very fortunate to be able
00:00:16
to work within research parents involvement in sports and what
00:00:20
i'm gonna talk about in the next seven minutes is just
00:00:23
to study looking at heaven's knowledge and haven't application
00:00:27
a sport psychology principles and nutritional principles within youth sport settings so i
00:00:33
guess the first question is why did we decide to do
00:00:36
this study well as we've had to about the last couple of
00:00:39
days have it's a really important stakeholders within mutes pool
00:00:44
and actually without haven't sport what makes this does it currently does
00:00:48
full time writing the searching parents we've had an opportunity to than
00:00:53
some athletes what it is that they would like from parents
00:00:56
and what the adhesive told us is that they want that haven't study involved during competitions
00:01:02
that might run counter to what some coaches want but but yeah it's definitely one
00:01:06
that parents involved and internet parents to be supporting them in and mental preparation
00:01:11
and also when they're physical preparation specifically in
00:01:15
terms of guiding the nutritional intake
00:01:18
however what we don't know is whether tenements actually know what to do
00:01:23
so we know what athletes one but parents it got a little chance of do remiss if they don't know this information
00:01:30
so consequently that has of the study was really just again lay of the land in terms of
00:01:35
haven't seen knowledge around these two topics so in terms of
00:01:40
gaining is intonation we carried out a survey in
00:01:43
open ended six pages as a widow four hundred gallons
00:01:47
and then we followed up with fifteen interviews
00:01:50
as you might imagine issues given us huge amounts of data um i'm that
00:01:54
data's being now that underlies a process of content analysis and phonetic analysis
00:02:00
unfortunately i don't have time to go into one of the results what i'm hoping to
00:02:04
give us just a flavour of some of the things that the parents told us
00:02:09
so flawlessly with regards to sports psychology then all the compass actions
00:02:14
most parents had an idea about sports psychology well when i say like it was very bored
00:02:20
the parents knew that sport psychology was related to the mental side of the gate
00:02:25
i mean generally talked about sports psychology in relation to enhancing performance
00:02:31
how where the parents had very limited understanding but
00:02:34
sports psychology could also factor into the enjoyment
00:02:38
aspect and in fact and number of parents were concerned that
00:02:42
if we started to discuss sports psychology with younger athletes
00:02:46
that you might actually make spoke to serious and it might happen that children off this board
00:02:53
in terms of the types of practised it so the types of things parents would doing to support their children's
00:02:59
psychological development the majority of parents gave an indication
00:03:03
that they might discuss what psychology but they
00:03:06
would focus specifically on psychological skills such as self
00:03:10
taught visualise a should all goal setting
00:03:14
where parents seem to less comfortable was with regards to their own behaviours
00:03:18
and the types of things that they should be saying before during and after competitions
00:03:24
specifically pants made made reference to very what statements that yours
00:03:29
go out and enjoy it go out and have fun i love new the sorts of things that we might in tolerate but they want
00:03:35
uh lacking in an understanding of the idiosyncrasies of what they should be
00:03:40
saying and how they should adapt their behaviour in different situations
00:03:45
one concern for me as someone who works in this area was that actually
00:03:49
and number of parents thought that they should really have nothing to do with this
00:03:53
area to work and that's sports psychology should only be considered by x. but
00:03:58
obviously anyone in the bill user patent will have an understanding that you always influencing
00:04:03
it showed in psychology so one of the conversations that you have and so
00:04:07
really what we started to that was parents need a little
00:04:09
bit more information so that they're comfortable in this area
00:04:14
in what might prevent parents forming game eating at a psychological level
00:04:19
it was really this concern of this the section that
00:04:22
only an x. that's in particular sport psychology practitioner should be involved in this
00:04:28
and parents really recognise that they didn't they didn't know what they should do
00:04:32
they also were very open in acknowledging that sometimes their own emotions up a overtaking them
00:04:38
at competitions and consequently they they worry about saying the wrong thing
00:04:42
to this so busy trying to manage what they're doing
00:04:46
over time no some of the parents gave an indication that as they spend
00:04:50
more time in that environment or they had could draw an apple knowledge
00:04:54
this could actually facilitate engagement there and also when they had
00:04:57
opportunities to learn from others or observe that the parents
00:05:01
of fundamentally believes the sports psychology was something they should engage in
00:05:05
they took on this took on this ball of
00:05:08
gas facilitating a conversations around sports psychology
00:05:13
knowing channels when we talk to the parents about sports nutrition his was an area
00:05:18
that they felt much more confident all the implied they were more confident
00:05:22
and if that this was something that guy is pam and we really should be involved in
00:05:26
comment an important thing to note here is that we ask parents to
00:05:30
talk about what they wanted to do from a nutritional perspective
00:05:34
and then what actually happened and the vast difference is often um in
00:05:38
terms of those things are not discuss that in a moment
00:05:41
into the types of things that parents indicated wanting to do it
00:05:45
in the twenty four hours before competition they talked a lot about
00:05:49
how the diet and focusing on ensuring children well well you
00:05:53
in four hours before competition there's a i don't really know focus on energy
00:05:58
very occasionally link was made the carbohydrates but generally is a very broad statement about energy
00:06:04
similarly this very what umbrella term of ensuring fuel energy was
00:06:08
provided you're in competition with a little mention of hydration
00:06:12
and then comes competition there was a shift to talking about recovering but this
00:06:17
consistent message just around getting children through it for energy was was consistent
00:06:23
there was one concerning part of our parents feeling that after
00:06:26
competitions than to be used as a treat or what
00:06:29
depending on how comes but that's another discussion for another presentation
00:06:35
so very quickly in terms of the things that were preventing
00:06:38
times doing what they wanted from a nutritional perspective
00:06:41
it it is that is really what time in logistics travelling to competitions
00:06:45
preparing meals in hotel rooms and then children not lighten through
00:06:50
and this isn't really important point because the parents had ideas of specific suits children should be
00:06:56
any affection and didn't like them they had no backup they didn't know where to go in those instances
00:07:01
when pilots what in control them and they were able to dictate what you want
00:07:05
to my eating they felt more confident and when she went in what
00:07:09
very knowledgeable about this area themselves again they felt more confident in this topic
00:07:16
so of well enough whistle tot start for the taken
00:07:20
for me as a practitioner source research is is
00:07:24
really we need to start working with parents in helping them
00:07:27
to understand both of these really important topic areas
00:07:31
and specifically we need to start moving beyond just telling parents what to do
00:07:36
we need to go beyond telling them what to say what t. v.
00:07:39
guide children and help them to understand long very doing these things
00:07:44
'cause if they understand why they need to do these things there have the
00:07:47
ability to change their involvement and change their behaviours depending on different situations
00:07:54
so thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to share my
00:07:57
thoughts and i would be very happy to take any questions how
00:08:04
ah thank you very much it's always nice
00:08:09
to hear some noise qualitative study
00:08:12
i think uh we do to to mm qualitative study in general um
00:08:20
so what could you in what does do if for work i mean do you
00:08:28
does that or do you intend to
00:08:32
move form for some education new things circuits so my my big
00:08:39
research areas around parent supports and boats that will be using
00:08:42
this data for in a lot of the other dates that i have is a rapid uses the pool programs for parents
00:08:47
i'm in an ideal world we provide that support program face to face and we we were
00:08:52
working for a number of different settings in terms of how that might best work
00:08:56
also with feeding back directly to the parents a little hand outs and leaflets
00:09:01
just to give them some key messages that they can then use impact
00:09:06
and the bomb to reasonable to to just to uni differences between
00:09:11
the sporting groups do you wanna worse is there any trend
00:09:17
so you if you if you notice this is predominantly from swimming parents
00:09:20
um we are continuing data collection and we're expanding out here
00:09:24
in this ring can spend a lot of time talking about goal setting and we spend a lot of time talking about
00:09:29
um visualisation of races and that was very different to some of the other sports
00:09:34
what you're staying in and we still analysts and some of the data is actually the pants on making
00:09:40
huge distinctions in terms of the types of competitions so we've got we've we've got data from
00:09:45
people going out in a hundred metre sprint and we've got people going out playing at you
00:09:49
know ninety minute football game and still the same messages are coming through so uh
00:09:54
that in itself it is quite interesting a duty to the larger interesting thing as compared to so called
00:10:01
you use a welsh perverted or um i i don't i don't know if i can uh i
00:10:07
don't know if i can make a generalisation such that by what we did find when we did
00:10:12
the follow up interviews is that when you start talking to parents that and huge ratio engagement
00:10:17
it's very class no less apparent and if you question the sort of
00:10:21
fruit that you're giving a child you you could beeps it
00:10:24
the criticising them as a parent so i think there's a very big defensive element around that that constance
00:10:29
and and feeling they should know what they're thinking that you can do your request you know
00:10:39
thank you very much for your presentation question oh mm in begin to actually to steam
00:10:49
um some of the parents question regarding distribution and they don't know how to deal with that
00:10:56
have you got to turn on on me beach differences course if some sport
00:11:04
get some more information than incontinence significance
00:11:10
the state to say here um
00:11:14
the majority of the parents haven't received that much information on nutrition so they they
00:11:18
they would during we asked them where they drew their information from and
00:11:23
somewhat consenting is concerned mainly but understandably that mostly just going
00:11:27
to the internet and obviously the concern there is
00:11:30
we don't know where on the internet where they're getting the right information on not
00:11:35
um but i think you know we've seen to the presentations it's that that individual tailoring as well so
00:11:40
um in terms of the comparison of sports we don't have that information do we know
00:11:44
as a general population adjust going on the internet and finding anything they can't
00:11:49
i think it's really important that parents are are provided with information according to
00:11:57
australia has to make the record shopping in um adapting nutrition sports nutrition
