00:00:00
good afternoon everybody uh in the strategy we used to bring your um bottles of wonder restaurants so i yeah
00:00:07
um song you to try asking so uh the uh introduction bars
00:00:12
and also thanks for extended the invitation to come to
00:00:16
mon true of course uh a microphone the longest because how could you not
00:00:20
accept an invitation to come to this beautiful part of the world
00:00:25
so now it's time to switch from portuguese english to stride in english
00:00:29
uh so again difficult for you i'm sure but let's see how we got so
00:00:34
i guess my perspective about um uh
00:00:38
designing successful actually passed twice a
00:00:41
requires us to really look at it through two different lenses
00:00:45
so the first lanes is really establishing evidence and the d.
00:00:50
tells a and the interventions associated uh with developments
00:00:54
uh you know we got a few maybe speak is to have the next to die to talk about
00:00:58
a very detailed information about uh an ideology of injury
00:01:03
a bouncy loads and nutritional balance a channel
00:01:08
identification coaching in here to get spectra
00:01:11
but the sign time we also need to take that big each of you
00:01:15
and and this analogy that the kaleidoscope we need to bring always pixels in colours
00:01:20
to get a you know latch creature to see the overall uh effect so
00:01:25
i think with beyond discussing these monotonic elements of development
00:01:30
you know i don't know that you better get pretty tired listening to the only thing about
00:01:34
development is training hours or ten thousand hours i think we can be be on that
00:01:39
and that we must look the myriad of factors and careless which affect a development
00:01:47
so if we're talking that part twice it's helpful to have some sort of a round definition
00:01:52
about half wise but actually in the talent development literature there's not really a good
00:01:56
clear definition of what the apostle a. e. so um i guess for the purpose of this presentation
00:02:03
um it from our perspective once again if we look at all of those colours they're representing
00:02:08
all the myriad of factors that need to come together in order for an athlete develop
00:02:14
what we're trying to do is to basically fallen this a navigational read along to that we can
00:02:20
kind of follow in order to increase the probability is of us achieve peace out concert
00:02:27
it's manufacturing sequence of experiences to optimised high performance potential
00:02:37
so uh like this before probably administrator or cornet or national
00:02:42
federation had you actually got detriment to do this
00:02:47
well one thing is for certain that a competition haas
00:02:52
why is not an athlete development halfway so
00:02:55
when i speak to many national federations if you ask them play show handy
00:02:59
your views on f. lee development your philosophy and also your plan i'll show you these
00:03:04
and what will they will be this progressive increase from junior
00:03:08
competition up different levels right up to saying your competition
00:03:13
uh but of course i think is a pyramidal thinking uh has uh
00:03:18
you know being um well remarked upon and i think a lot this committee that
00:03:22
really this pyramid talk approach lacks any sustained in harry call well conceptual integrity
00:03:29
so just to reinforce point if you use yeah we did a study with two
00:03:33
hundred and fifty six hop performance athletes in this trial yeah and we chatted
00:03:38
the performance trajectories three d. j. junior and senior competition experiences
00:03:44
and you can see here yeah is incredible variation in individual variability here and uh
00:03:51
um you can say that this linear approach uh uh which is what previous uh pyramids kind
00:03:57
of show is actually quite a race thing so for example if we look yeah
00:04:04
this is the signs starting but if you look at one half late so it the two athletes erase bodies rowing
00:04:10
so the first effort he began rolling at thirty eight is an i. d.s light up
00:04:15
i will uh i want to reach senior international level for strata
00:04:19
but this was a ripoff why and he several percent actually follow this very linear trajectory
00:04:25
and you um compare that with the second half late starter roughly the
00:04:29
cyanide also took i used to reach international success so international representation
00:04:35
and and you can say that it's it's really she usually
00:04:38
period so f. i. part twice a hugely a variable
00:04:46
so instead of putting down a triangle about competition levels
00:04:51
let's try to be a little bit more developed
00:04:53
and think about some all keep our flight elements the
00:04:56
relative and important for each level of development
00:05:00
so as an example you have for age level of development we're
00:05:04
getting the levels light uh but they should be clear goals
00:05:07
you should be very clear that the content uh they chew i'm to a
00:05:12
producer all that you want star of physical physiological psychological technical tactical
00:05:18
that will come scored knowledge you actually require athletes to reach an age level
00:05:23
how you going to uh to point those development methods so through
00:05:28
training okay it's a competitions of course you know competitions
00:05:33
ah a portly stakeholders that you know the
00:05:37
federation's parents the schools the clubs
00:05:41
and so on by all contribute to the development of athletes and often
00:05:45
we don't really pay attention to the overall student development parts while
00:05:51
we from ross next that haven't already but it's very important to have a
00:05:54
new recruit talent you identified talent and also how you select it
00:06:00
hopefully based on some a clique criteria that national federations thought about and put yeah
00:06:06
but also you know had he planned on transitioning your affluence
00:06:11
at each corner of level so think about what to do i need now what will line the next
00:06:18
because you know your x. factor for your sporting a many value add elements that you might why yeah
00:06:24
three development through sports on sports medicine richer research and development
00:06:28
what value asian monitoring and management so this is kind of
00:06:33
getting a little bit more in the long looking for
00:06:39
okay i'm in the r. s. c. put at a consensus that the not so long ago
00:06:45
and it's a very powerful statement and it was uh put together by next but a
00:06:51
group you know notice it a secret law is here to come seeking to them
00:06:58
g. o. s.'s at a um and so this this piece of work
00:07:03
is actually almost biblical in terms of its impact um we
00:07:08
should all much stop and really think about this client of recommendation
00:07:13
as provided by a such a i never got a committee
00:07:17
um what this expert group did was basically that value why did the current state of silence
00:07:23
and uh and practised within youth athletic development and then i did a great series of uh recommendations
00:07:30
the recommendation was very important from our perspective was this
00:07:34
one and we ought to adopt viable evidence
00:07:40
informed inclusive frameworks of leslie development the flexible is
00:07:46
based practised elements four inch developmental level
00:07:50
we in bryce individual effort progression and of course we probe
00:07:54
to respond to the f. eight respective and these
00:07:59
so i don't know how many federations would know that this recommendation ages
00:08:04
uh for more discussion with many federations is very few and i certainly have absolutely no idea had been put
00:08:10
it back on the recommendation but it's a very important one we should stop to think about that
00:08:18
okay so um our belief on quickly that this
00:08:24
prime work a fully mates those criteria set
00:08:28
out for the all i say no of course on the little bit boss puzzles involving
00:08:33
putting this together with much strain callings but i think it really does
00:08:37
make the navy's um of the recommendations uh on body i say
00:08:42
so um what these framework he is a it is inclusive energies
00:08:47
mary lou uh levels of base practised sinhalese flexible has all these
00:08:51
things that the and i see was looking for but also
00:08:56
this particular frame looking development tried to address some of the issues that were raised by other researchers
00:09:01
in the development chameleon detriment to improve vastly development
00:09:05
so we wanted more stages of development
00:09:08
we didn't wanna have frameworks or a morals depending on your perspective to
00:09:13
be chronologically in content prescriptive 'cause this huge variation between sports
00:09:18
more holistic and multi disciplinary and of course you need to
00:09:22
think about involving more a sty columns within your planning
00:09:26
so we got to a little bit uh in you know not but just a couple of very broad features
00:09:32
so well look at the participant here in a moment you
00:09:35
know it's underpinned by these important elements of possibly development
00:09:41
a critical component of these foundations skills these really skills
00:09:45
which allow uh the participant what haven't acted lost all maybe halfway to enjoy sport
00:09:52
or for the re few right into the heart
00:09:55
performance partway through some clever identification selection
00:09:59
and the threesome talent places and then uh some my
00:10:03
even uh reach a c. international levels of performance
00:10:09
but the guys earn a little bit more detail using a concrete example
00:10:13
using the sport uh of skiing which i think i think in our bed in switzerland you you did is a little bit
00:10:20
okay quite important sport here in switzerland so um that going
00:10:24
through all the data all of the f. tame and
00:10:27
framework and d. f. part of if ten stands for foundations anna begins really
00:10:32
very really basic physically to see which we'll see pick up that phone
00:10:37
within extend and we found some of those movement patterns typically within schools clubs all communities
00:10:43
and then we corner alright well to a committee to sport or even do some competitions and that means we
00:10:50
can stay in sport have health you lost all or it's the prices for hop off on sport
00:11:00
so i'm hopeful shows so that what they're what i would call collectively good move it's so they're
00:11:05
a bunch of kids here they got good movement fundamentals at the next stage they and um
00:11:12
as i said we we take we we try to identify does have got feature for high performance board
00:11:17
and so we we could identify and select in and
00:11:21
another important component is to actually can for the
00:11:24
the tire out of town that they do have the right stuff
00:11:27
for the future to to ah approachable uh that they ah
00:11:31
um i responded to training and they do have the sort of things that we would like to have
00:11:36
you know detainees down the track for example so a talent confirmation face is very important so
00:11:42
within this framework this is actually a process with
00:11:47
quite bought the sport all the national federation
00:11:50
that is taught informed consent talent but from an awfully point of view what
00:11:54
it represents is a very really talents stardust just at the beginning
00:11:58
flies of crossing over from participation into the heart performance parts like so
00:12:04
which one to differentiate talent and this is the first caught
00:12:10
then after talents confer then then is uh uh then we can call of move more into training yeah
00:12:16
wasn't putting a lot on because it has to be a lodge and this in the home
00:12:21
and resources and energy in order to achieve because obviously um as for themselves
00:12:27
so there are college with the talent even bases and so they working hard is really a long way to
00:12:34
say your international levels there's lots of a growth in
00:12:37
many ways and skills and body um in mind
00:12:42
and importantly die are on track and meeting expectations
00:12:46
other the coat of themselves or the federation
00:12:53
you know be some that will actually achieve some sort of breakthrough reward
00:12:58
um and so for me that's really a true talent uh that at
00:13:02
this point whether it be a junior championships a national tolerable
00:13:06
maybe it's um the reward is being imported into a larger high performance trying squad maybe it's uh
00:13:12
a university scholarship at some moment that by connor right through
00:13:16
and um uh deport thing is is is that it's not
00:13:21
open senior competitions other really on the the g.
00:13:24
but of course this is that traditional tricky here isn't it weird i ought to step up to see new competition
00:13:31
often it's a step out on what i can't and make
00:13:35
those demands and and other job that one before
00:13:39
so their talent achieve is and then finally uh and we
00:13:43
have those who actually make a scene international a
00:13:48
competition model ought to point out that we have though is that if you want represent the country
00:13:54
we had those that are actually successful and and win medals
00:13:59
and we have those that actually win medals of a multiple high performance articles and
00:14:04
so you maybe you call them legions but the court of recent mastery
00:14:07
qantas status but the point is when looking better part as we have to think about connecting now
00:14:14
these different types of athletes all participants think a bad again what do we need at each level
00:14:20
and had to ensure that we can progress or transition to the next uh what's required
00:14:29
and just in terms of this conference i asked uh uh frederick it the only before the comments
00:14:34
about this idea of this young athletes for what what you mean by young half like well
00:14:40
from if i try to summarise what i went through before uh sees me um well
00:14:45
from a these uh definitely uh a young i thought so the not at senior level
00:14:50
but if we're talking and trying to think about developing young athletes
00:14:54
him really have to look at these young athletes whiting
00:14:57
this the participants know called ominously ones like wanna move into the high performance
00:15:02
a program but we really have to consider had do we maximise good movies and develop
00:15:08
more good movies and thread this pathway before we really start workings and has talents
00:15:15
maybe on china had a little bit powers for the um the divide it on the second day that uh yeah next conference
00:15:22
okay
00:15:24
if i had to come up with a few things and was good at one point each level
00:15:29
what could we do to try to make up caught liberia let's start with those foundations
00:15:36
the first thing right at the very earliest died we need more parental education
00:15:41
and when it's too late parents now it's important in with the
00:15:45
uh children to encourage them to ply developed physically to see
00:15:50
um at the second level definitely if we could have
00:15:53
more from the school physical education digital age cadence
00:15:57
and more uh probably school visit full stop i think that would
00:16:01
buy 'cause she huge difference to a development path wise
00:16:06
and this one here would be outing car a just
00:16:09
to try to recruit more pedagogical type of people
00:16:13
into a bicycle itchy because it's not necessary that you need to have great sport
00:16:18
skills in order to coach at this level but you need to be good
00:16:21
with time management beamer dividing encouraging now had work with keats
00:16:26
and so i'm often hear federation say we don't have enough coaches will get people from outside the
00:16:32
sport that a good with the skills and i can do it one for job for you
00:16:38
in terms of the televise 'em out my crushed wrong
00:16:43
a point here that tell identification is very difficult to select into the feature
00:16:49
and so let us be more inclusive rather than exclusive
00:16:53
without selection so much hard to develop logic cohorts
00:16:57
not based on this idea of feature potentials often we we select way too
00:17:02
early and we have a it's not a very klee some wants
00:17:06
in terms of confirming tell if you did take on your cohort trotted confronted i had
00:17:11
the scroll if someone said you referencing corrode wait did i i willing to make mistakes
00:17:16
other room to try the willing to learn a very important to futuristic sits
00:17:21
and did i respond not only to the training stimulus do they respond
00:17:24
to the couch and maybe the team sport today to dictate nights
00:17:30
at this stage three starch um i think it's important coaching point of view
00:17:35
that it's very holistic that the coaches i will also to be transient
00:17:39
and not false genius the june you will change should success uh up on them
00:17:45
and to be very endeavour redraw asked with a coaching and
00:17:49
always think about saying is excess rather ingenious excess
00:17:54
and then for those talents uh that are succeeding uh at a high level they and uh i
00:17:59
think which one to integrate them or within the heart performance program particularly support and maintenance
00:18:06
from those coaches and athletes about so that the transition can be a smith and facilitated
00:18:12
just to round out the set this idea of what we could do i just make the point that
00:18:17
understanding the seeing huge amounts of competition will always shied
00:18:23
you know what we will ultimately do you know at least talent and foundations stages
00:18:31
well i had one one other point or shouldn't forget and that uh are there all if we
00:18:36
can improve by fails sport and system pathway coordination
00:18:41
that is between high performance and participation
00:18:44
we get that is skills on a national federations get a senior late is a bit aborts
00:18:50
and flatten the coach coaching hierarchy say that all coaches wrap this system
00:18:57
ah are important not just the ones at the top so there's some things if we were able to do
00:19:02
and the king for down change one thing at each element of parts why this might be a something to consider
00:19:11
well so what do you look in your work through the microscopic
00:19:17
lanes or more that kaleidoscope lanes big creatures sort of stuff
00:19:22
what's really critical is that we and i i ever think about transferring knowledge
00:19:29
and so i'm really like this quite quite dan gould and
00:19:34
he says that it's a grave mistake to focus so much attention on knowledge acquisition and so little
00:19:40
attention on knowledge integration and dissemination also feel sometimes in terms of it we actually now now
00:19:47
but we don't get it translated on the grants not done the i see examples of classic
00:19:51
is that a lot of people i know where that it so we need
00:19:54
to try to do better in getting this information on the ground and
00:19:58
uh i know to more i will hear from if it's hard
00:20:01
in the story for the back piece of aboriginal signs and
00:20:06
and a practitioner gap and um early lot this five state model which
00:20:10
tries to bring together you know the evidence about an intervention
00:20:15
and bringing in to a group of sty callers who will be responsible for the knowledge
00:20:20
uh trends for uh tools in product development so colour really lock this uh underpinning philosophy
00:20:27
okay so just to wrap up now i'm in order for us
00:20:32
to really optimal is the work of the national federations
00:20:36
and national sports agencies and now nationally p. can
00:20:39
be committees we need to actually facilitate change
00:20:43
and i was gonna reference um apartment sandra from the hints you've tried it sounds
00:20:48
a lot signal is displayed in conference with even two thousand fifteen posts olympics
00:20:53
in order to trying to system in order to move this in the right direction what needs to happen
00:20:58
well we are than it across a set turning platform so you gotta show you
00:21:03
know mobile as everybody that's not the greatest foundation really for changes it
00:21:08
but sure enough as it crosses so some done when there was in skating
00:21:11
income chang or austria in that's across as things which are inch
00:21:17
more policy wise if we have a very good lead it's typically charismatic leaders in sports
00:21:23
uh whether they'd be um a performance manages coaches c. e. o.'s administrators
00:21:30
these are the people look into the politicking and might change happen and is a hot but noted not
00:21:37
a real otherwise which you get system chimes if you host an olympic games not saying this happened
00:21:42
three sydney watch was a new case board concerning working of tokyo where
00:21:47
the answer to every question is yes because the hosting usually picks
00:21:50
surface which one unfortunately um the put the thought was not the stock your chance of placing
00:21:56
olympics but of course you do have any um twenty twenty uh usually p. kinds inside
00:22:02
that might be your chance and also the chance that
00:22:06
we can focus attention on this huge development issues
00:22:10
and uh and and and so do outside get a tractor challenge up
