i'm gonna discuss in the next two minutes of a specific for social participation
some discussion could be used to support
so we know how much we right i mean even if it's with my from using them but
then at the same time we know that there's a lot of computing going on in phones
so what you have in your pocket today allows you to do uh
things like this it can estimate where you are the places you go to in your daily life
can also uh know about activities you do especially freezes frequent uh connect into your uh
two years my watch or your um wearable devices but but you can also collect media in the form of images or videos
and also there are many more sensors on the phone that perhaps you don't use but they're they're they're anything from um
but it's the maximum letters to a gyroscopes that either information
perhaps you don't use it today but someone else could
and this is a really good the the main a topic or of the talk and we could use phones
not to take sell things but rather change the orientation of the phone to look at the world
and actually to try to make sense with information we can collect altogether in real time if you look at the
world with the phone so the key word here is to engage but you might wonder to engage format
so impact as we have been using these basic idea yeah we invite people to download
it out and use up to collect information for several different purposes here for examples
we could uh use this to friends and generate an open mark of points
of interest in a specific region in this case it's about it
we could also work with students of the university to make them
think like a workers of our angel in a crisis situation
and as him to actually go through the exercise of going to places collect
physically meetings also collect opinions about a specific uh topics of interest
or coming could actually use it as a way of collecting opinions in real time about specific topics of interest
and also we could work week with art is to try to promote a sustainable um
developments as the unsustainable tourism but backing artist to specific places and let them uh create
this is essentially a some other possibilities that the plot from a house that you're very simple yes to
invite people to participate in these more like that the collection uh challenges as we call them
for local courses so the basic words here are the local the
fact that he's someone could be an association and the
large see the one who needs that information and that promotes
through civic participation the collection of such kind of information
the basic um metaphor behind the platform is that each of us can contribute a little bit of data to a project
and it is only through the joint participation of many of us that we can collect
the data that is needed really by by the entity who has the need for
so how does it work to back to see these are regular up that you can uh then
load in a vote for i. phone android but mitchell walking through an example this is uh
a challenge that we are designed with the practical uh
professional there there are the chart inside so
and i got here was to actually invite students from this from the school to
a record or some of the traditions of only about a fantastic creatures
and to put themselves in the field and you will see a couple of
examples and then to create art around being in a place specifically valley
so the logic in in each case is the same as i said see these associations schools
mm even individual citizens can have for a specific reason the need for data
better could be about location data that could be media data could be surveys
and many of us don't just have a way of doing that easily
you come to civic that work and we can allow you to create this challenge you know the
worst to announce that you want to collect data in that you wanted people to participate
the application itself would allow you to to collect in that i just described before so text audio photos
video and continually we're adding new capacities to the plot from so you can support other data types
and finally in i think most importantly people can participate i think we have lots of
social meter channels of participation in there is is very active as we all know
but there's also something a corporate in terms of the logic around which i'm most
if not all of those uh social networks work really there's space or space
for talking of all the courses in collecting data about discusses that the not necessarily have to run
through the common social mean channels old of course i could be connected to those
channels to uh raise awareness in communicate for instance the success of specific charges
so how could participate what about uh about about a dollar a civic uh
a dot org and then you can download the artist on it as you
would normally with your europe stores and then you're ready to participate
not only what we do or as as as as part of our research work is actually to call the sign
experiences with people who want to work with us by these i mean that we uh discuss the goals
that that the entities would like to achieve we decide the question there's in a way that might might
it might make the the responses clearer so it's it's a little bit of appalling if you want
and after that we essentially provide their they have that would allow to collect this information
so it's it's a very simple you could take pictures collect media
in order to collect as much information as you need yeah
you see 'em will design a graphic user interface
i'm gonna give it to examples that illustrates the the potential use of these applications
the first one as i said is there is a combination a discovery should we do with
the packing sex so that uh i we called up with this on the mound
the idea was ice as i said to let our students
to recover some of the uh um traditions of only about
creatures fantasy creatures and then to do some are great
so students uh use a few days to go or or different places evaluate to take some
of these media and then to re purposes for their creative uh goals these an example
oh what a what a one of these two is in this case law because i have decided to do these are quite gonna uh
an email this another example they can i mean you seem so this is the image of a
the um uh well yeah and then you can see how cities have actually report was the image of
which any trees grass taking into into something uh much more creative you can go to the
first page whisper you can you can see other examples of what students have greater
the second example i wanted to present today was something that we did with the city
of los on last year so perhaps some of you a rate or or or
um so only media that is either the study that ah essentially disclose them quite um
hi statistics over street harassment on the c. d. overalls on
their reputation civic was news actually to run this that
in this particular case we collaborated with the with the observatory of security of the
city of los son wanted to correct this this information and who so value
in a rapid deployment of the questionnaire inequity sign that would allow
them to reach the audience they were interested in interviewing
ah integrate information in a secure way so the the the the same uh application that was
used for example to show with our students was using these case for these uh
for the survey and what is interesting is that by protecting this
evidence or physical sign um was able to also or
justify certain policies that since early two thousand and sixteen seventeen they have been implemented
so the the point that is how could these type of uh about them but perhaps more importantly how good
this type of thinking could support a completed i think what i'm here to advocate for is that um
religion is cities need data because the reckoning for not only phenomena that are happening but also
phenomena that could be happening for instance the uh we've got coming decided to change examples
i think there's still a lot of space to be creative on how to collect data and
also how to engage citizens about collecting data that informs authorities about these phenomena of interest
i'm thinking of two potential ideas one that has been discussed completely
with a with a colleague someone formica villages union right
would be possible to understand what are the mobility needs of certain types of
residence in in um mountain villages specifically people who don't have a car
as we know for for um people of a certain age and also for people who are not yet allow to have a car
when it can be difficult but they were which solutions are found to they
could be very dispersed perhaps this season ready or or or or or
neighbours are really getting organised to to to essentially move people around when they need it
but it's usually not tried it on record meet said hoping that needs our in house the solutions really are constructed today
so we could imagine of uh of using this application to exactly for that process
english exactly the type of people that i could benefit from policy along those
uh dimensions into hasn't to participate contributing data about their whereabouts
a boat for instance for teenagers and uh for others
that's a good idea is essentially to be outlook on many uh
initiative very successful initiatives that are in getting citizens to do
a certain uh participate in activities that benefit mountain villages i'm thinking for instance
of the good work of of some information that uh recovers i
trash from or mountain areas after the ski season
in this case we could also imagine about adding that they're out on top of the scoring parenthesis
to be able to some time document more precisely at the level of
g. p. s. location where the different pieces of trash i found
i get that information to some basic they then only takes you to to be
able to tell stories about the distribution special distribution of these kinds of objects
but also to make people who participate in these um activities to be more aware
actually other values elicited value that they have that they could ah i
can t. v. in data at the same time as far as doing what they don't already which is like the which is going to be marked
so this was a short presentation because i wanted to leave space in case anybody have any questions
we're very open to collaborate and i hope that based on the speech someone
you know who actually follow up and come talk to me inch high
any questions
yeah this is a very important question and technically i would say what you could do in addition to
but you can do for the kids to collect specific sensor data that the but you
cannot collect invisibility that you're interested in collecting at the same time offer participants um
there there are fit bit better because fraser interesting physical activity that
you cannot do that necessarily on on the default feasible up
but there's another side that is not just about the bit about actually the ownership
a freezes in the in the case of low seven perhaps
just a thought that was not the base with collect information these to some degree sensitive in
the people might not be willing to talk about them put directly on the social network
for these type of uh uh data types i different solution
uh maybe maybe a better a better uh approach
but there's also the fact that not everybody suffers book in other everybody's and is not chat so if you wanted
to reach specific target populations that you know are probably not there then you also need a a different channel
so i would i would come make a combination of these different factors to locate for the existence of that from like this
are there any other questions
right and so it's not that
